Energy Matrix Group recognised as top-50 private business in WA
March 2026
Energy Matrix Group’s (EMG) consolidation and growth in recent years have been recognised in the first ever Top 100 Private Businesses Western Australia publication released by Business News this month.
EMG was listed 50th with an estimated annual revenue of $334 million among businesses spanning many sectors. Revenue was used as the primary ranking metric as well as information obtained from a range of publicly available sources.
CEO Allan McDougall said the top-50 ranking was an acknowledgement of the Company’s consistent growth over 35 years, starting as an energy consulting firm in 1991 to now being one of the largest gas energy traders in WA.
“This recognition is testament to the vision and ambition of our Chairman Mike Lauer and all the people past and present who have built EMG to be the Company it is today,” he said.

“EMG is now the fourth largest buyer and seller of gas in WA, trading upward of 40 petajoules annually and a nomination service that manages 45% of all gas consumed in WA.
“We’re also supplying more than 50 major gas users nationally, hold a contracted gas pipeline capacity of more than 100 terajoules per day and are steadily increasing our footprint in the Eastern States.”
In the publication’s foreword, Business News Project Editor Elisha Newell wrote while private business was far less visible in WA’s economy, they were no less influential than their publicly listed counterparts.
“Behind office doors and across industrial estates, privately owned businesses have built much of the state’s wealth,” she wrote.
“Private companies employ thousands of Western Australians, underpin our biggest supply chains and generate billions of dollars in revenue each year… together, the entities on this list generated more than $80 billion in revenue.
“This is not simply a ranking, but a reflection of how WA’s economy is evolving and the private businesses driving that change.”
Launch of the publication was celebrated at a gala event attended by EMG CEO Allan McDougall and General Counsel Steve Bird on 11 March 2026 at the State Reception Centre.
